The newel post and staircase wainscoting are attributed to Thomas Day, a renowned furniture craftsman from nearby Milton, NC. Within the structure, the Great Room is a late 1800's Canadian barn, disassembled and reassembled in West Virginia, then moved to Durham and reassembled on site using the Amish tradition in true barn raising. All of the wood on the walls, ceiling and floor of the Great Room are antique. Every detail of this home was meticulously and intentionally curated, down to the heart pine floors in which 2 years were spent designing and executing how the boards would be laid. For one who appreciates quality and rarity, great care was taken to replicate materials throughout the home to match the limited supply of antique materials. The end result is an incomparable home with one-of-a-kind details, gorgeous flow for entertaining, and thoughtful purposes throughout.
A carefully restored separate 1840's farmhouse sits on this land that was once part of a land grant given by King George to the Couch family in the 1700's. The owners restored the farmhouse, removing sheetrock, wallpaper, newspaper and burlap to expose the original boards. The ceiling in the first floor bedroom bears its original green paint. The original log cabin "summer kitchen" remains and according to the NC Department of Cultural Resources, the cabin door is likely one of the oldest remaining in the state.
