Meet Steven Shane: Broker and Owner, Shane Aspen Real Estate

"There is nothing more exciting to me than putting together a successful real estate transaction where everybody is really happy," says Steven Shane, Broker and Owner of Shane Aspen Real Estate.

Steven and his group of twenty brokers, along with an expert support staff that includes an in-house marketing and advertising director, have a passion for Aspen real estate and all that life there has to offer.

As a go-to summer location, with hiking, cycling, fly-fishing and rafting, as well as its world-class winter skiing and snowboarding, complemented year-round by community events, the arts, restaurants and retail, Aspen is a coveted destination. It also has a special appeal to families. "It's a place where you can come together as a family and spend quality time," explains Steven, who is raising daughters Tatum, 13, and Remi, 3, with his wife, Clare.

EXPLAIN HOW TECHNOLOGY HAS ENHANCED THE HOME SEARCH EXPERIENCE

STEVEN: One of the single greatest commodities to anyone today is time. To be efficient is critical. Buyers are doing their homework and communicate to us what they think they may want. In turn, we can send them links with options that are well suited to them. We have a live chat/instant message component on our website where if someone has a question, they can get an immediate response. We are actively blogging, sending newsletters and emails and our website is the central hub. It's an enhancement tool, but it is not a substitute for me or any other broker.

HOW DID YOUR PREVIOUS BUSINESS BACKGROUND LEAD YOU TO OWNING A REAL ESTATE COMPANY?

STEVEN: I've always been someone who had my own business, from boating supply to snowboarding stores. I moved to Aspen in 1994 and saw that if you were willing to work hard, you could earn a living in real estate.

The relationships with friends and acquaintances and their referrals led me to assemble brokers and a support staff with expertise and experience. Everybody value-engineers what it is they are buying. To one buyer, it's the proximity to town; another buyer, it's views or river-frontage; to another, it's strictly value. But for most, it's a blend of criteria. You have to listen. A good broker listens.

We do a lot of thinking outside the box [at our company]; lots of events and sponsorships. Our sponsorship participation in the USA Pro Cycling Challenge allows a charity to benefit from our fundraising each year.

HOW DO YOU THINK YOUR COLLEAGUES SEE YOU?

STEVEN: First and foremost, they appreciate my work ethic. They further appreciate my ability to think outside the traditional lines of real estate. I am always thinking forward.

When not at the office, Steven enjoys snowboarding, cycling everywhere, whether it's Napa or Europe, and deep sea fishing in Florida or Mexico.
